This soundtrack has been a regular for me for many years. I finally wore out my old copy and needed a new one.I initially bought the album (all those years ago) because I remembered the songs from the movie fondly. There’s plenty of fun to be had in “Never Say Never” and “A Duo.” The realistically untrained sound to the vocals on “Somewhere Out There” (as sung by Fievel and Tanya in the movie) might make some cringe, but I like the authenticity it adds to such a sweet idea. Then of course there’s the “pop” version with Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram. But for me the score is the real strength. I saw another reviewer say that this is James Horner’s best work. I’m not familiar with enough of Horner’s work to make that call, but I can believe it.The violin theme that opens the movie is used as a story point as Fievel’s Papa plays it, and I enjoy the other themes that repeat throughout. The Main Titles and End Credits are my favorite tracks, and others (like “The Market Place” and “Reunited”) are just as good. “Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor” kind of stands out since it’s a choral piece. The music is one of my favorite things about this movie, and I think the album certainly does it justice.
